June 1969
saw the next Searchers single release
on
UK-Liberty: Kinky Kathy Abernathy b/w
Suzanna.
The A-Side was again written by
producer Kenny
Young, the B-Side by John
McNally,
both songs were sung by Mike Pender,
Franks sang
harmony vocal on Kinky…
In the UK
the record had the catalgue number
LBF 15240,
in Australia it was LYK 3250.
The single
didn’t chart.
Liberty in
Munich, Germany, was a bit faster.
Already in
1968 they released another
Searchers
song from the Liberty sessions:
Shoot ‘Em
Up, Baby b/w Suzanna (Liberty 15202).
Again the
A-Side was written by Kenny Young and
sung by
Mike Pender with a little help
from Frank.
This
picture cover offered a rare chance to see how the Searchers looked in 1968.
According
to the Searchers the differences between them and Liberty about Shoo ‘Em Up,
Baby caused
the end of their contract with that record company.
There are
two different versions of the song. First the (German only) common single
release
and second
a longer version with an added part in the middle. The Searchers wanted to
release
the longer
version, Liberty insited to use the shorter one - and won.
The
extended version remained unheard until 1971 when Liberty UK and Germany
released
the
following lp:
For me
- the Searchers were only a vehicle for producer Kenny Young. He didn’t
really care for the group, he just needed someone for his songs. It didn’t
work - so goodbye Searchers.
